John Selawsky and I have worked together since co-chairing the Planning and Oversight Committee from 1998-2000. John played a critical role in our fiscal recovery, knows and understands our budgets and facility needs, and works with all parts of our city. Please return John Selawsky to the School Board.
"John Selawsky is a proven leader. His experience with budgets and operations and his commitment to the children and families of Berkeley will be essential in these tough times of financial shortfalls. Join me in supporting John Selawsky for re-election to the Berkeley School Board."
- Sheila Jordan, Alameda County Superintendent of Schools

The Sierra Club - 10/28/2004
John Selawsky is the only Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) Board candidate the Sierra Club has ever endorsed. John has an outstanding personal record as an environmentalist. In his first term on BUSD, he took leadership in converting the BUSD bus fleet to biodiesel fuelling, installing solar design panels at BHS, and improving environmental design standards for playgrounds and other structures.
The Sierra Club endorses John Selawsky!
Tom and Jane Kelly, KyotoUSA/Helios Project -
"John was instrumental in getting the now completed solar project at Washington Elementary through District administration and the school board. His leadership has changed the minds of many who now see the value in making our schools more energy efficient."

John Selawsky is a trusted, experienced Boardmember and the current Board President. He has served during times of fiscal hardship and state and federal funding uncertainty, and yet has helped guide Berkeley Unified to impressive improvements and gains. State API scores have steadily improved for all our schools during John’s tenure, and in fact 7 of our 11 elementary schools have hit the 800 level, a score considered excellent. Two other elementary schools are within 15 points of that coveted 800 score.
John was the first and strongest Boardmember to recognize the extent of Berkeley’s fiscal problems in 2001-2002, and worked with District, County, and State staff and officials to stabilize Berkeley Unified’s fiscal operations.
John Selawsky has worked with a wide range of community and city organizations and individuals. Significantly, the educators and community members John has worked with the most are his strongest supporters, as evidenced by his impressive endorsement list. John has worked with Safe Routes to Schools, the LGBT Task Force, the Berkeley Public Library, Kyoto USA/Helios Project, the food and nutrition collaborative, and the District’s art and music committees. He serves on the District’s Audit Committee, the Policy sub-committee, and served as a liaison to the Surplus Committee. He also serves on the Alameda County Child Care Planning Council.
John Selawsky worked the 2020 initiative, the District’s response and commitment to addressing the achievement gap, through the District, Board, and City processes. John is committed to student success and opportunities for all our students.
We need John Selawsky’s integrity, experience, knowledge, and commitment on the Berkeley School Board for another four years.
